Hidden beneath our feet, in the mountains and valleys of north Wales, lies the world’s finest natural slate. Here at Bethesda we carefully quarry this 500 million year old stone, shape it and allow the natural beauty to shine through.
Of course, we’re not the first to bring this gem-like stone out of the earth and into the sun. They’ve been crafting Welsh Slate in north Wales since early Roman times and locals discovered the grey treasure here around 700 years ago.
Our Penrhyn Quarry started life as a small-scale operation, mined by people from all walks of life. But in the 18th and 19th centuries Welsh Slate rapidly grew in popularity. Soon it was being transported around the globe. It became, and remains, world famous.
With such exceptional quality, it’s no surprise that Welsh Slate is just as prized today as it has been throughout the centuries. Architects, designers and artists of all kinds seek out its unparalleled beauty and durability. Our range of unique artisan tableware is even championed by the likes of two Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines.
That’s why we’d like to say ‘diolch’. Thank you to these mountains. Thank you to the many generations who have kept the traditions alive. And thank you to our customers who know genuine quality when they see it.
